Reaching out to a counselor can be very intimidating and nerve - racking. Having such feelings is completely normal. That being said, something to know about counselors is that they are trained to be non – judgemental and project nothing but positivity towards the clients. To further sooth your anxieties related to approaching a counselor, we can assure you that all the personal information that you will share with the counselor would remain confidential.

Rest assured, what can you expect from your first counseling session?

Empathy and understanding – Counselors are trained to put themselves into the shoes of their clients. The counselor would try to understand your point of view.

Safe space for exploring emotions – A counseling session provides a safe space for processing emotions. A judgment free atmosphere created by the counselor will help you feel free to open up. Know that crying is completely okay.

Discussing and finding problems –The counselor will ask non – probing questions that will help you understand your emotions and share your emotions. The counselor will act as a facilitator and guide for the client to explore their issues.

Finding solutions – After identifying the problems, ways of solving the issues would be discussed. Steps, techniques and required intervention will be shared.

On average one session can last 45 – 60 mins. These sessions are done in comfortable surroundings. After analysing a client's case, the counselor will decide how many more sessions are required.
