Being Shanti amidst mental health struggles

Updated: Jun 29, 2022

Lessons to learn from celebrities who struggled with their mental health.

Be it ‘Shanti’ from ‘Om Shanti Om’ or ‘Meenamma’ from ‘Chennai Express’, we have adored each and every character that Deepika Pudkone has offered us. Is it easy to believe that the actor who played these roles also had a tough time combating depression? The first thing that comes to our mind is “how can someone be successful and unhappy at the same time?” Can we think it to be something that can happen to any of us? Why do we fall prey to the LKK (Log Kya Kahenge) syndrome?

Success has nothing to do with not falling prey to mental illness.

Here are some other celebraties who we can learn something from

Anushka Sharma

Remember ‘Tani partner’ from ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Alizeh’ from the ‘Break-up song’? Did you also know that the actor playing these roles had a genetic background of anxiety? One question that pops up is: “what is shameful about it?” We can talk to people and vent out our feelings to help us cope with the chattering mind.

Share your feelings with your loved ones or talk to a counsellor

Hrithik Roshan

‘Rohit’ and ‘Jaadu’ from ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ are the two characters we all fondly remember. But why is it difficult to empathise with the actor who played this role? Why is it hard to believe that such a talented and successful person like him can be a target of depression? We think it is as normal as going to a doctor for a stomach ache? It is high time we make it normal. Do you still associate depression with weakness or insanity?

Mental illness must be viewed as being as normal as a physical illness.

Shraddha Kapoor

We have been huge fans of her since the days of ‘Aashiqui 2’. She faced anxiety for six long years. According to her, she still deals with it in a positive manner. Why not think of it to be a part of ourselves and embrace it, just like we have accepted our hair, skin texture, bodies etc. It is important to understand “who we are?” and “what do we feel?”

Embrace your inner-self!

Shaheen Bhatt

Alia Bhatt’s sister, Shaheen Bhatt, faced depression since her teenage years and wasn't aware as to how to approach her family about it. This is one of the common concerns that we face. But is it good to hide our feelings from our loved ones? When someone approaches us, should we be mindful of helping them out? The simplest thing we can do is to at least listen to them or guide them to a good professional.

Talk to your peer or family member if they are suffering from mental illness or else guide them to talk to us!
